Hide Home Address on Google Business Profile (Singapore)

How to hide your home address on Google Business Profile as a service-area business in Singapore, what Google requires, common pitfalls and how to fix a visible address. If you serve customers at their homes and do not want yours shown, set up your Google Business Profile as a service-area business: you give Google your address for verification, then choose to hide it and list the areas you serve instead. Google only allows this for businesses that travel to customers, so you need to genuinely qualify, and you should check the current steps at support.google.com/business because screens change.
Why this matters for home-based businesses in Singapore
Many Singapore trades and tutors run from an HDB flat or condo: handymen, aircon technicians, freelance cleaners, home tutors, mobile beauticians, photographers. Showing your block and unit on a public map is awkward at best. Customers may turn up unannounced, and your family's privacy suffers. You may also be subject to rules about running a business from your home, such as HDB's home-based business guidelines or your condo's house rules, so check the current rules at hdb.gov.sg and with your management corporation. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
The good news is that Google has a proper route for people in exactly your position. The catch is that it is built around honesty about how you serve customers.
What Google requires from a service-area business
Google distinguishes between a business that serves customers at its location and one that goes to the customer. If you meet customers at your address, even occasionally by appointment, you are generally treated as a location-based business and the address is meant to be shown. If you only travel to customers, you can hide it.
Location-based or service-area?
| Location-based | Service-area business | |
|---|---|---|
| Customers come to you | Yes, during set hours | No, you go to them |
| Address on the map | Shown to the public | Can be hidden |
| What is displayed instead | Pin and street address | A list of areas you serve |
| Typical Singapore examples | Clinic, salon, tuition centre | Aircon servicing, handyman, mobile cleaner, home tutor |
| Verification | Needed | Needed, address kept private |
Check the current rules. Google's requirements for service-area and hybrid businesses are updated from time to time. Read the latest guidance at support.google.com/business before you change your setup.
How to hide your address, step by step
The exact buttons move around, so treat these as the general flow and follow what you see on screen.
Hiding your address as a service-area business
- 1
Open your profile
Search for your business name while signed in to the Google account that manages it, or use Google Business Profile Manager.
- 2
Go to Edit profile
Look for the business location or service area section.
- 3
Choose the right type
Say you serve customers at their location, and that you do not serve customers at your address.
- 4
Hide the address
Turn off the option to show your address to customers.
- 5
Add your service areas
List the neighbourhoods or areas you truly cover, then save.
- 6
Check how it looks
Search for your business in a private browser window and confirm the pin and address are gone.
Choosing service areas wisely
List areas your team can reach within a sensible time. A handyman in Bukit Batok may list Bukit Batok, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi and Jurong. Listing the whole island looks unrealistic and brings enquiries from customers you will have to turn down. Google may limit the number of areas you can add, so check the current limit.
Verification with a hidden address
You still need to verify. Google may ask for a video, a postcard or another method depending on the situation. Verification is a private step; your address is not shown to the public unless you choose to display it. If you are still at the verification stage, our guide to verifying your profile in Singapore walks through the options, including home-based cases.
Common pitfalls that expose your address
Check yourself against these
Tick the ones that apply to you. Each is a reason your address may still appear.
- You told Google customers can visit you at your address
- You entered opening hours as if you run a shop
- Your website contact page lists your home address
- Your invoices, ads or social pages show your unit number
- A third-party directory copied your address and shows it on Maps
- Someone suggested an edit that re-enabled the address and nobody noticed
Address on your website and other places
Hiding the address on Google does not remove it from the rest of the internet. Check your website footer, contact page, privacy page and any listing on directories or Facebook. Under the PDPA, you should also be thoughtful about what personal data you publish about yourself and your staff; check the current guidance at pdpc.gov.sg. A WhatsApp number and a contact form are enough for most customers, and a website with a clear form and web chat makes it easy to book without ever publishing where you live.
What to do if your home address is already showing
Fix an exposed address
Edit it yourself
Turn off the address display in your profile.
Check suggested edits
Reverse any change you did not make.
Check other sources
Website, directories, social pages.
Ask for help
Use Google Business Profile support if it persists.
Start by editing the setting yourself. If it will not let you hide the address, you may be classified as a location-based business, and you may need to review how you describe your service. If the address remains visible after you change it, use the support options inside your profile or the help centre at support.google.com/business to report the problem. Note the date, take screenshots of what the public sees, and keep notes on what you changed.
Cached versions of search results may take some time to update, so check again after a day or two. Do not repeat the same change many times in quick succession, as repeated edits can trigger a review.
Hybrid situations: when you sometimes meet customers
Some businesses do both: a tutor who teaches at students' homes and also at a studio, or a baker with weekend pickup. Google has a hybrid concept for this, where the address is shown because customers can visit, and service areas are shown as well. If you want your home address private, do not offer pickup or visits at your home. Meet customers at a public place, a rented studio or a shared space that you can legitimately list instead.
Wording on your website and profile
Exposes you
Keeps you private
A mini case: a home tutor in Sengkang
A part-time maths tutor claims her profile and enters her flat address with hours of 9am to 9pm. Within a week, a parent turns up at the door expecting a centre. She changes her setup: she says she teaches at students' homes and online, turns off the address display, and sets her service area to Sengkang, Punggol and Hougang. She updates her website contact page to show a WhatsApp number and a form, and removes the unit number from an old social page.
She keeps a short note of each change and date. Nothing about this guarantees how Google will display her profile, but it matches what Google asks of service-area businesses and keeps her address off the public page.
What to expect after you save changes
- Same day
Check the profile
Look at how it appears in a private browser window.
- 1 to 2 days
Re-check search results
Cached pages may lag behind.
- A week
Audit other places
Website, directories, social pages.
- If unchanged
Contact support
Share screenshots and your notes.
What not to do
- Do not use a made-up address or someone else's premises. Google can suspend profiles for misrepresentation.
- Do not rent a virtual office just to appear on the map unless you genuinely operate from it and meet the requirements.
- Do not add a pin on a nearby landmark to hide your location; location accuracy is part of the rules.
- Do not change your business type repeatedly looking for what works. Make one careful change and wait.
